RACE AND ETHNOCULTURAL RELATIONS

The following are items were brought forward at the Youth Town Hall event held at Devonshire Mall on August 24th, 2006.

  • Many youth subcultures in Windsor
  • Pressure from advertising is a big factor
  • Everyone is different and we should understand that
  • A lot of racism stems from people not understanding other cultures
  • Stereotyping youth
  • Some teens create a bad image for all teens
  • Host a multi-cultural show (Freedom Fest with a twist)
  • Appreciation of the youth and their involvement (awards ceremony)
  • Team up with high schools for multi-cultural events
  • Theme nights for different events

General Consensus: Youth are negatively perceived by the general public so a way to turn that around needs to be addressed. Having an annual youth awards night to highlight teens throughout Windsor is one way to showcase how teens are making positive contributions to their community. Holding different multi-cultural events around the city and raising awareness are some factors in way to combat racism and discrimination.
